The development of the UMP45 began in the mid-1990s as a further evolution of the JSSAP submachine guns and the MP2000. The major aspect of the UMP weapon is that it uses a straightforward blowback action with the elimination of the roller locking system found in the MP5 series. This design aspect greatly simplified the manufacture of the UMP as well as lowering the unit cost. A further point of the design is the construction of the magazine and non-stress bearing parts from glass-reinforced advanced polymers. Parts that are exposed to higher levels of stress have metal inserts to help bear the load. The final result of the design work is a weapon that Heckler and Koch gives a minimum 100,000 round service life.
