SERVICE – Imperial Japanese Navy

When adopted by the Imperial Japanese Navy, the first specimens of the French Hotchkiss Model 1929 heavy machine guns were purchased from France directly. Production began in Japan after purchase of a licensing agreement with Hotchkiss. The very large weapon was mounted on a variety of Navy mounts, including double and triple weapon mounts. For use on land, a relatively simple but rugger tripod mount was adopted. The weapon could be found set up with a shoulder stock and pistol grip as in the specimen described above, or with dual spade grips, much like a US Browning M2 flexible weapon.
