This was the first metallic cartridge weapon adopted by the United States Navy. The original version was adopted in 1865 and was chambered for a .50 caliber rimfire cartridge and had a spur trigger without a trigger guard. The 1867 version was chambered for a centerfire version of the same round and had a more standard trigger within a trigger guard. An Army version was adopted in 1871 but did not see widespread use. Thought dropped from active Navy use when cartridge revolvers became more available in the early 1870s, the Remington Rolling Block single shot remained in production in other calibers, notably .22 Long Rifle, until 1909.
