This is a very robust service revolver, necessary as it was adopted as WWI went into the muddy trenches. The design is a standard break-open style with the hinge at the front bottom of the receiver. The extractor star automatically extends when the weapon is opened. The extractor extends far enough to allow empty brass to fall away while still retaining any remaining loaded rounds, though this does not always work in practice. The extractor star snaps back into place when the receiver is fully open, allowing fresh ammunition to be easily dropped into place. The release for the opening of the receiver is a large lever above the trigger and behind the cylinder. The unlocking lever is easily operated with the thumb of the firing hand.
