This is an unstocked submachinegun intended to be fired with both hands. Early literature from the manufacturer went with the slogan “Bursts by one hand” and though the weapon can be fired fairly controllably with one hand, it is much more accurately used with two hands. One of the more effective means of firing Jati Matic is to have a sling around the shoulder and attached to the base of the weapon. Pushing the weapon forward tightens the sling and gives a very steady hold in spite of the design not having a stock. With the loaded weight in the 2 kilo (five-pound) range, it is a very light weapons for its size. Part of the reason for the weight of the weapon is that the lower receiver is made of a polymer plastic, as well as a number of the internal parts and the forward handgrip. The forward handgrip acts as a vertical forward grip, a cocking lever, and a safety. With the front grip in the folded position, the bolt is locked in place and the weapon cannot fire or the bolt be moved by jarring. Pulling the front grip down allows the weapon to be fired, or cocked for firing. If the bolt has been cocked, the word “FIRE” appears on the side of the bolt through the ejection port. The word is engraved with high, raised lettering so that it can be detected by feel in the dark.
The ejection port of the Jati Matic is only open as the bolt travels to and fore while firing. This helps keep the weapon sealed against dirt and debris. Part of the controllability of the Jati Matic on full automatic fire is due to the unusual design of the bolt and the receiver layout. The patented bolt of the Jati Matic moves upward in an inclined plain rather than straight back when the weapon is fired. This system helps force the front of the weapon down under recoil. With the bolt effectively travelling upwards when fired, the rear of the receiver is particularly high. This height allows the rear pistol grip of the Jati Matic to also be raised and more in line with the barrel and the forces of recoil.
There is no selector switch on the Jati Matic. Instead the weapon utilizes a progressive trigger. Light pressure on the trigger moves in back slightly and the weapon fires semiautomatically, a heavy trigger pressure, pulling the trigger farther back, causes full automatic fire.
