Steel shot has been required for waterfowl and other hunting since 1976 in nine States of the Atlantic Flyway. Since steel is much less dense than lead, hunters would often use shot one or two sizes larger than they would have of lead shot. Other hunters might use steel shot of a smaller size than lead shot to increase the density of the shot pattern. The loading of steel shot in 10 Gauge magnum casings help insure that there is a sufficiently large quantity of shot for more effective hunting.
