This round was developed in the late 1980s specifically for use in a Personal Defense Weapons (PDW). The PDW concept was to design a weapon that was more accurate than a pistol for the average operator to use, and more compact that a standard submachinegun or small assault rifle. The 5.7x28mm round was also intended to be able to defeat enemy body armor out to a range of 200 meters. This would be the type of weapon/ammunition combination to be issued to technical personnel, drivers, heavy weapon operators, guards, and other personnel would are not direct front-line combat troops. The round has also proven popular were police and security agencies for its close-in ballistic qualities combined with a very limited maximum range.
