This is the smallest version of the IWI X95 weapons family and is an evolution of the Micro-Tavor assault rifle. The name Micro-Tavor was dropped by the company in 2008 when the X95 was introduced. Instead of the gas-operation and rotating locked bolt system of the rifle-caliber X95 weapons, this model has a much simpler internal design and utilizes simple blowback to operate with the relatively low-powered 9mm round. As in many of the pistol-caliber weapons based on a rifle design, troops trained in the using one weapon are well capable of handling the other. The design of the X95 makes the weapon completely ambidextrous as the cocking handle and controls can be switched to either the right or left side of the weapon to aid the operator. The magazine for the X95 SMG is based on the earlier Uzi magazine but has a relocated magazine catch notch. This prevents the earlier magazine from being used in the X95. The top of the X95 receiver has a long section of MIL-STD-1913 “Picatinny” rail for the mounting of sights, both folding iron sights and electronic reflex sights. Additional sections of MIL-STD-1913 “Picatinny” rail can be added to the sides and bottom of the fore grip group of the weapon for mounting vertical grips and illumination aids.
