SERVICE – Russian Armed Forces as well as Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Counter Terrorist, Paramilitary, and Law Enforcement services.
Like the OTs-02 Kiparis, the PP-91 Kedr (Cedar) was designed in the early 1970s for the Soviet Army, but was not adopted until the mid-1990s by Russian Law Enforcement agencies. The PP-91 has better accuracy that the average compact submachinegun as it is hammer-fired from a closed bolt. The weapon was designed by Evgenij Dragunov, the designer of the SVD sniper rifle, and the controls and trigger mechanism match his experience.
The safety/selector lever is on the right side of the weapon, above the trigger. The selector switch is pressed all the way up to the notch marked “АВ” for full automatic fire. The center notch, marked with an “ОА”, is for semiautomatic fire. And the bottom notch, marked with an “ПР”, is the safe position. A very short folding stock fits over the top of the weapon and locks in the open or folded position.
The Kedr has been produced in a number of chamberings and styles, each known by a different name. The above date is for the original model, chambered for the standard 9x18mm Makarov round.
