SERVICE – Russian Federation Interior Ministry (Internal security), Law Enforcement
Intended primarily as a small, concealable automatic weapons for Internal Security and Police units, the Kiparis (Cypress) was designed in the early 1970s by the TulaCentral Sporting and Hunting Arms Design Bureau (TsKIB SOO) at a request from the Soviet Army. For a long period after it was designed and perfected, the Kiparis remained “On-the-shelf” without being adopted. In the early 1990s, the Kiparis was adopted for issue by the MVD and Russian Police Forces. It has also been issued to various Russian Special Operations groups.
The weapon resembles the Czech Vz-61 Skorpion and fits much the same mission. The Kiparis has two different sized magazines it can be loaded with, a 20-round magazine for maximum concealability, and a longer 30-round magazine for more available ammunition. Additionally, the weapon has a removable PBS suppressor available for it. The suppressor has an estimated service life of 6,000 rounds, which roughly equals the barrel life of the weapon. With the suppressor, the weapon is designated the OTs-02-1.
The safety and selector control is on the left side of the weapon where it can be operated by the users thumb without letting go of the pistol grip. The balance of the Kiparis design is that of a conventional select-fire blowback submachinegun.
