Another round designed by John Browning for a more powerful line of pocket pistols. It was introduced in Belgium in 1912 as the 9mm Browning Short four years after being released to the American public in the Colt Pocket Automatic Pistol line of handguns. The 9x17mm round is much more powerful than the 7.65x17mmSR (.32 ACP) round which preceded it, but can still be chambered in a relatively small semiautomatic pistol using the simple blowback system of operation. The round was adopted by a number of military organizations around the world. The Ingram M11 submachinegun is well known for being chambered in this round.
