This is considered a “Classic” pocket pistol cartridge designed by John Browning in the late 1890s. The round and small pistols made for it, have been very popular, particularly in Europe, for both the Military in terms of a self-defense weapon for Officers, as well as for Law Enforcement, particularly Detectives and Undercover agents. Greater than half of all the pocket pistol made in the 20th Century were chambered for 7.65x17mmSR ammunition. The Czechoslovakian military adopted a submachinegun, The Vz-61 Skorpion, which also used this round. The SR or semirimmed characteristic of the cartridge case allows the round to be used both in small semiautomatic pistol as well as small revolvers.
