The is basically an identical round to the 7.63x25mm Mauser round as produced by the USSR. The Mauser C96 pistol, particularly the shorter-barreled “Bolo” Mauser, was very popular in Czarist Russia and the later Soviet Union. When a Soviet produced pistol. The TT-33 Tokarev, was developed, the Mauser round was renamed and produced for the new pistol. There is a very slightly greater bullet diameter on the Tokarev round over that of the Mauser. Besides the TT-33 pistol, the USSR produced a very larger number of submachineguns for this round and forced its adoption on the post-WWI Warsaw Pact countries. Several loadings for submachineguns were developed that could be damaging to the earlier Mauser pistol if they were to fire them. The basic rule is that 7.63x25mm Mauser ammunition may be fired in a 7.62x25mm Tokarev weapon, but the reverse is not recommended.
