This is one of the oldest self-contained metallic cartridges and is still in use today. Originally loaded with Black Powder, the .22 Short today is loaded with smokeless powder. It is still very popular for rapid-fire pistol matches as the round has very little recoil. It is also the smallest round commonly available and as such has been used in some very exotic firearm designs.
