This is one of the largest pistol cartridges ever used in the United States military. It is not the most powerful since it was used in the days of black powder loadings only, but it was the first 12.7mm (.50 caliber) US pistol round. The Navy cartridge case has a thin rim while the slightly later Army round has a much thicker rim. This prevents the Army round from being chambered in the Navy pistol. The Navy round will chamber and fire in either the Navy or 1871 Army weapon.
