Introduced by Colt for their Model 1872 Peacemaker revolver, this was one of the very popular round for use in the Old West of the United States. The large case allowed for a heavy load of black powder to push and equally heavy bullet out of the muzzle of the weapon. From 1875 to 1892, this was the standard pistol cartridge of the United States military. With the development of smokeless powder loads, the Colt round lost a good deal of popularity as the round was inefficient with smokeless loads. The case was simply too large for the amount of smokeless powder that could be safely loaded.
