This is a licensed, near exact duplicate, of the British Mark II Aircraft Lewis gun. Normally, only used as aircraft armament, the Type 92 Lewis Aircraft weapon could be used for ground or shipboard duty with the use of the tripod mount. As an intended lightweight weapon for use on board aircraft, the Type 92 Lewis Aircraft gun was normally fitted with a spade-grip and did not carry the cooling system of the ground gun version. A wooden buttstock was available, but not often seen as it would not be of use on board a normal Japanese aircraft. Replacing the Spade grip with the Buttstock increases the overall length of the weapon by 17.8 cm (7 in) and adds 0.28 kg (10 oz) to the overall weight. The tripod of the Type 92 Lewis could be easily and quickly converted to an Antiaircraft version. Additionally, the feet of the tripod had holes in them that could be used to secure the mount on board the wooden deck of a ship. The Aircraft and Ground Type 92 Lewis weapons were the last of the Lewis gun designed to be produced by a major government. They went out of production in 1945 with the fall of Imperial Japan.
