This variation of the MSG 90 had the original designation MSG-90D MR, later changed to MSG 90A1. It was developed in part to meet the requirements for the US Department of Defense D MR (Designated Marksman Rifle) Program. The requirements included a threaded muzzle for the attachment of a sound suppressor as well as the addition of a flash suppressor. Iron sights were added to the weapon, adjustable out to 1200 meters. An ejection port deflector allows the MSG 90A1 to be operated safety from the left shoulder. The safety/selector lever has also been made ambidextrous, duplicated on both sides of the PSG 1 type trigger group for use with either hand.
