This grenade was officially introduced in an article by the Heeres-Feldzeugmeisterei [Army field staff office] in September, 1938, just a year before the war began. The smoke grenade was an almost exact copy of the high-explosive Model 24 stick grenade and was operated in the same way. To identify the smoke grenade, a hand-painted white strip was placed around the center of the handle.

When the delay string was pulled, the fuze initiated its delay and fired the igniter capsule after 4 to 5 seconds had elapsed. The smoke composition would burn for several seconds before pouring out from the 8 holes in the bottom flange of the grenade head.
