Appearing very much like a cross between the German HK MP5 series and the Soviet AKSU, the PP-19-01 Vityaz is a direct evolution of the PP-19 Bizon design. As was the Bizon, the Vityaz is based on the AK-74 design with simplifications for the lower pressure 9x19mm round. The gas system of the AK-74 has been removed and the weapon operates on a direct blowback system. The design maintains the same controls as the AK family with a safety/selector lever on the right side of the receiver. With the lever all the way up, the weapon is on safe, down to the fist click is full automatic fire> Down to the last click is semiautomatic fire. The closed-bolt, hammer-fired system allows for very good first round hit probability.

The basic Vityaz model has iron sights, the SN model also has picatinny rail sections along the upper receiver and a dove-tail side rail on the left side of the receiver. The plastic magazines are strong and light for their design. An additional aspect of the magazines are the sheet metal fastening devices that are part of the magazine. The devices allow for two magazines to be attached side-by-side with each other. The left-side magazine is set higher than the other mag when they are attached to allow for quicker reloading. The weapon also utilizes the AKS-74-style side-folding skeleton stock.
