This is not a manufactured item for sale as a firearm. Instead, it is unique in that the information and programming to make the weapon is available and the individual maker produces it on a 3-dimensional plastic printer. As originally designed, the only metal part in the device, including the springs, is a common nail used as a firing pin. The design fires a 9x17mm (.380 ACP) round and can reportedly be fired several times before the barrel assembly becomes useless. To prevent any violation of the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988 in the United States, an opening was designed into the receiver to accept a 3 x 3 x 2.5 cm (1.19 x 1.19 x 0.99 inch) block of steel weighing 6 ounces as required by the law. The originating company, Defense Distributed, has been the target of a volume of litigation from the government to outlaw the release of the information package to produce this design.
