Estimates at Colt hold that there were less than 10 of the Model 608 Survival rifles ever made, making it one of the rarest of the Colt M16 series weapons. The size of the rifle was such that when broken down into a barrel/upper receiver assembly [length 47.5 cm (18.7 in)] and a Lower receiver/Stock assembly [Length 44.7 cm (17.6 in)] the entire weapon along with four 20-round magazines, could fit in the hard tray of a seat-type survival kit. It was the only original Colt design to utilize the conical flash hider on the barrel.
