This stick grenade is an almost direct copy of the Japanese Type 98 stick grenade of WWII. Most iron grenades filled with picric acid have to have the metal surfaces that come in contact with the acid coated with varnish or other protective agent. In this case of this grenade, the Chinese simplified the process by wrapping the explosive charge in waxed paper.
