This new Beretta submachinegun started out as the B&T P26 submachinegun in 2015. Rather than produce a weapon in competition with their own designs, B&T licensed the rights to the design to Beretta in 2016/17. Beretta has put their own input on the weapon and have introduced it as the Beretta PMX. The round upper receiver is based on a polymer coated precision aluminum extrusion, making the body of the weapon particularly light and corrosion-resistant. The lower receiver is made of a high-strength polymer that also aids in giving the weapon having a very light weight. The barrel is cold-forged for strength and both it and the bolt are made from a special high-strength steel alloy for extended life. The muzzle of the barrel has a three-lug attachment for a suppressor.

The top of the receiver has a full-length section of MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for the mounting of iron or optical sights. There are no integral iron sights on the weapon but sets of Italian-made LPA folding iron sights come standard. In addition to the top rail, there are three shorter lengths of MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock on fore end. The controls, including the magazine release, are reflected on both sides of the receiver with the exception of the bolt lock release which is only on the left side of the receiver. The bolt remains open, locking back on the bolt lock, when the last round is fired from the magazine. The cocking handle of the bolt is easily removable by the operator and can be switched from the right to the left side of the weapon without special tools.

For maximum first-round accuracy, the PMX fires from the closed bolt position. For simplicity, the weapon utilizes a straight blowback operation. All internal components are specially coated and hardened as necessary for maximum resistance to corrosion, minimum friction, and maximum parts life. The double-column, double feed magazines are based on the B&T design of translucent plastic bodies so all remaining internal ammunition can be easily seen by the operator.
